The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland located below the bladder in men, playing an essential role in producing seminal fluid. Prostate cancer arises when the secretory cells of this gland transform into malignant cells, which can grow and spread beyond the prostate if not diagnosed early. Although initially localized, prostate cancer may invade surrounding tissues, lymph nodes, and even metastasize to bones, lungs, or the liver. It is the most common cancer in men after skin cancer and is a leading cause of cancer-related death. Early detection through PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood testing has significantly improved outcomes by identifying the disease in its early, more treatable stages.

A prostatectomy is the surgical removal of the prostate gland, either partially or completely, and is typically performed when prostate cancer or gland enlargement obstructs the normal flow of urine. The procedure may also be used in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) causing severe urinary symptoms. Prostatectomy can be performed through traditional open surgery or minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic-assisted methods, depending on the patient’s condition and cancer stage. Post-operative care focuses on restoring urinary and sexual function while monitoring for cancer recurrence.
